A good quality early Kangxi period charger depicting a male and female phoenix (Fenghuang) in a rocky garden scene with flowers and scrubs. The male and female can be differentiated by the tail-feathers.
Fènghuáng are mythological birds found in Sinospheric mythology that reign over all other birds. The males were originally called fèng and the females huáng, but this distinction of gender is often no longer made and they are blurred into a single feminine entity so that the bird can be paired with the Chinese dragon, which is traditionally deemed male.
The backside is decorated with three of the Eight Precious Things, also known as the Eight Treasures, or babao in Chinese and has a fuku mark in double ring.
