An outstanding all-matching Japanese red lacquer suit-of-armour (yoroi) with navy blue cords, a multicoloured and orange hem and a 2-piece cuirass (kurenai’urushinuri kon’ito hi’suso nimaidô tôsei gusoku) featuring a crest 紋 (mon) depicting an ivy 蔦 (tsuta).
- 8-plate hoshi’bachi kabuto (helmet with domed rivets) with a parcel gilt circular maedate featuring the ivy crest between a pair of kuwagata-antlers, large 6-tiered chrysanthemum-shaped tehen’no’kanamono (decorative apex fitting), golden silk agemaki (decorative tassel), 3-tiered ‘kiritsuke iyozane’-plate shikoro (neck guards) and large back-bending fukikaeshi (face guards) covered with fragments of light decorative ‘smoked leather’ borders and fitted with en-suite ivy appliques.
- ‘Angry man’-facial mask (resseibô-type menpô) with separate nose-piece boasting a brownish white moustache, gold lacquered teeth, and 4-tiered red lacquer ‘kiritsuke iyozane’-plate gorget (yodarekake).
- Sode (shoulder guards), tôsei-type, constructed with 5 rows of ‘kiritsuke iyozane’-plates.
- Red lacquered kote (bracer), shino-type, lacquered metal pieces connected by Japanese mail (kaushi-gusari). The hand guards (tekko) decorated with low domed rivets. Placed over dark silk with chrysanthemum (kiku) design.
- Dô (cuirass) of the ‘yokohagi okegawa’-type with low domed rivets shaped like chrysanthemums with gilded petals, black silk lining and 6-parts of 5-piece ‘kiritsuke iyozane’-plate kusazuri (tassets).
- Purple silk uwa’obi (waistband) with a golden brocade chrysanthemum design.
- Haidate (thigh armour) of 4-rows of 10 red lacquered ‘kurata’-plates, placed on matching silk and decorative ‘smoked leather’ borders.
- Suneate (shin guards) of ‘shino’-type with lacquered vertical metal plates connected by kaushi-gusari over matching silk and with grey tateage (knee guards).
Complete with a square black lacquered store-box for a suit-of armour (yoroi’bako) featuring the ivy crest in front in gold lacquer. Fitted with 'pole carrying'-handles.
Height with box: approx. 160 cm.
Period: Japan - Taishô period/Early Shôwa period (Early 20th century).
