Saint Eustace was a Roman soldier who, according to legend, during a hunting trip in a wood had the vision of a crucifix between the antlers of a deer he was hunting. Dürer represented him as a knight who, struck by the sudden vision of the deer in the background, kneels down in amazement, temporarily leaving the horse and greyhounds free, which occupy the foreground. The movement of the main action into the background leads the viewer's eye deeper, through the trees, to the castle on the rock that dominates the landscape.
The originals are preserved at the “La Villa dei Capolavori” headquarters of the Magnani-Rocca Foundation. They are burin engravings made in the early 1500s.
