Statue from the recently conquered Peru (XVII Century) by the Spanish empire. Curious example of the "Cuzco" school from the XVII Century, local artist were starting to produce Spanish style art embedded with their own local details. Here, the Virgin Mary is depicted in traditional blue and red robes, dark hair and a cross hanging on her neck. Arms are missing, these would have been placed praying. Depicted with a painful expresion on her face that defies time, ("Our Lady of Sorrows", "Dolorosa") we can see her agony happening ght after the crucifixion of her Child, Jesus Christ. In this clasical representation, we can see the author was influenced by previous styles such Spanish Gothic but not only, we can also see the influence of the renaisance showing in the lively expression of her face, intended to move us. Figure of this kind are a staple in the Christian faith, Catholicism in particular and are found all over the Christian world in various variations. They provide a focal point for worship and contemplation either in public religious establishments or one’s home. Fair condition, wear and tear consistent with age and location of production. Arms missing. Large traces of original Polychromy present.
