Statue from south Germany or Tyrol, Austria. XIX Century. Bright blue, red cheeks and gold gilt used extensively, is among othes, a typical giveaway of the region this statue comes from. The Virgin Mary is depicted in traditional robes with the child Jesus sitting on her left arm. In this clasical representation we can see the author wanted to embed a sense of stifness to the image following the canons of the Romanesque and gothic styles. She is caring the imperial crown, meaning she is has been crowned by God and is Queen of all humanity. The infant Christ is also crowned with the imperial crown and is holding an orbis terrarium – “world of the lands” symbolizing the earth and Christ's dominion. His right hand is reaching tenderly torwards his mother. Figure of this kind are a staple in the Christian faith, Catholicism in particular and are found all over the Christian world in various variations. They provide a focal point for worship and contemplation either in public religious establishments or one’s home. Outstanding condition, no flacking or chips in the original polychromy, missing pieces nor any visible damage.
