Item Description
Presenting a stunning suite of six copperplate etchings, this limited edition collection of 85 is a tribute to the first volume of "The Tale of Genji," a classic work of Japanese literature. Each etching, a work of the late Kaoru Saito, is a testament to his mastery of the mezzotint technique. His prints, emerging from the darkness like whispers of lyrical fantasies, depict the elegant and mystical world of the Heian period with a modern sensibility. Saito's expressive use of rich blacks and subtle gradations imbues his female figures with an otherworldly beauty and depth, inviting viewers into an introspective journey through the epic narrative. This collection, accompanied by Saito's direct signature and a department store certificate seal, represents a profound legacy of Japanese printmaking.

Artist Profile
Kaoru Saito (1931-2021) was born in Hayama Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, and was revered for his mezzotint etchings that portray women in the midst of profound darkness, creating poetic and surreal worlds. In 1948, he studied nude drawing at the Academy 46 Art Institute, under the direction of Léonard Tsugouharu Foujita and Goro Tsuruta. At the age of 18, his self-portrait was selected at the Free Artists Association exhibition, marking the start of a prolific career. He won numerous awards and was honored as a member of the Spring Sun Society. Saito's work was celebrated in a major exhibition at the Seibu Department Store in 1978, and his work for "The Tale of Genji" began in 1982, culminating in a ten-volume series by 1991. His contributions to art were recognized internationally, with exhibitions across the United States, including the Vorpal Gallery, and his pieces were selected for posters and postcards at an exhibition sponsored by the British Museum.
