Miles Davis Quintet – Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud - is the French title of the soundtrack to the French film of the same name, known in English as "Elevator to the Gallows". The soundtrack was recorded by Miles Davis and his quintet and released in 1958. This soundtrack is considered one of the masterpieces in Davis' extensive catalog and is often considered a seminal for the film noir soundtrack style. The Miles Davis Quintet of the time consisted of Miles Davis on trumpet, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on alto saxophone, John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. This line-up is one of the legendary formations in the history of jazz. The music on "Ascenseur pour l'échafaud" is characterized by its dark, melancholic mood, which fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the film. The soundtrack was largely improvised, with Davis giving the musicians simple sketches of the film's plot and mood, and the band then improvising the music to go with it. The track "Générique" (Generic) opens the album and is particularly well known.
