Here is a Mké-Tou terracotta stew bowl, Bamileke, Cameroon. Potteries from the Ndop plain grasslands produce a variety of small bowls for heating and serving stew, a staple dish in almost every meal. Until recently, both men and women owned such a bowl, whose shape could vary from simple to ostentatious depending on the owner's rank and wealth. This beautiful specimen is modestly decorated with scarifications and features a thick patina of smoke-blackened. An anthropomorphic shape forms a handle opposite the spout.
