That’s when he married Leonor Guedes de Almeida, whose grandfather Constantino de Almeida had been founder of the famed Constantino Port house. Since then, Quinta do Crasto has become his life’s work. The last fifty years have brought him immense joy, but as in any great passion, great sacrifices as well. In 1994 they began to bottle and sell their own Douro wines. Soon afterwards they began marketing Porto wines from Quinta’s stocks, beginning with the 1978 Vintage Port. At about the same time, Jorge Roquette was able to start sharing this passion with his three children – Miguel, Tomás and Rita – whose hard work and energetic commitment have helped Quinta do Crasto earn its eminent position on the global wine map. They started by investing in the vineyards themselves – the central component to producing quality wines. In response to the growing global interest in the Douro wines, they decided to invest even further and bought Quinta da Cabreira in Douro Superior (Upper Douro), a 150-hectare property, where were planted 114 hectares of vineyards. Later, in 2006, they acquired Quinta do Querindelo, strengthening the response to their growing needs. Investments continued with the renovation of the barrel cellar and, more recently, with the remodeling of wine cellars and lagares. Currently, the family is again investing in the requalification of some vineyards. The winemakers have been key to this lifelong journey. They have brought vastly differing backgrounds, styles and skills together to make an invaluable contribution to the production of their wines. It has been a grand adventure for all involved, marked by many great triumphs. Jorge Roquette is convinced that many new adventures lie ahead and that they will bring continued success to Quinta do Crasto wines. This is just the beginning. The passion continues… WINEMAKERS: Manuel Lobo & Tomás Roquette. VINIFICATION The grapes from old vines were taken to the winery in plastic boxes. On arrival in the winery they were rigorously inspected on a sorting table. The grapes with their stems were then slightly crushed and transferred to a traditional stone tank (“lagar”) where they were foot trodden. After this, the grape spirit was added to stop the fermentation and fortify the wine. Ageing for 4 years in large oak vats (9000 litres). Bottled without fining or filtration; a light sediment may form in the bottle over time. 2003 TASTING NOTES Black. Very complex flavours of fresh wild bush “esteva” of the Douro region, with soft wild berries and dry nuts. Elegant attack, with great volume and compact structure. Round tannins with great deepness. Finishes very intense, with great elegance and persistence. 2004 TASTING NOTES Black. Excellent deepness, flavours of fresh wild berries and dry nuts. Elegant attack, with great volume and compact structure. Round tannins with great deepness. Finishes very intense, with great elegance and persistence. 2011 TASTING NOTES Deep purple. Excellent aroma intensity and concentration, with fresh wild berry fruit notes and delicate hints of chocolate and gum cistus. Engaging beginning that leads to a wine of great volume, with a tight-knit structure of firm, finely-textured tannins nicely wrapped in fresh wild berry fruit notes. The finish is balanced, fresh and lingering. 2016 TASTING NOTES Deep purple in colour, the nose o¬ers fresh notes of wild blackberry in perfect harmony with delicate hints of cocoa. Appealing on the palate, showing excellent structure composed of solid yet fine-textured tannins that are well integrated with fresh wild fruit. An enveloping wine with a balanced finish and good persistence. Because it has not been filtered, it meets all the conditions to evolve positively in the bottle. SERVING Excellent alone or with intense cheeses, as an aperitif or digestif. Store in a horizontal position, in a cool and dry place, protected from light and temperature fluctuations. Serve at a temperature of 14ºC to 16ºC. Consume in moderation.
