German Knight's Cross (Deutschritterkreuz des Freikorps Detachement von Randow) aka. "Randow Cross" First Class. Black lacquered, slightly curved, silver-plated cross in the shape of the Maltese cross. A vertical pin at the back. Enamel chip in the middle of the cross. 44 x 44 mm.
The so-called German Knight Cross was donated as an award to the Freikorps Detachment von Randow by its commander, Captain Alfred von Randow, in 1919.
The Freikorps was founded on January 5, 1919 in Schaulen, a town in the Baltics. Formed to protect a railway line, the railway protection battalion was subordinate to the 52nd Army Corps and later the 1st Infantry under Colonel Sydow. By its end, the Freikorps had grown to almost 5,000 men. From May onwards, other commanders were Captain Meyer and later Captain Würth von Würthau. From June onwards, the Randow Freikorps was renamed the 1st Battalion Reichswehr Rifle Regiment 71 and in August it was subordinated to Brigade 38. The Freikorps was then relocated to Celle under a new name.
The award was primarily awarded between 1919 and 1923, but continued to be awarded sporadically until 1928.
