★ Pink Floyd – Atom Heart Mother / Quadraphonic / 4 Channel RM Sound
"Atom Heart Mother" is the fifth studio album by British rock band Pink Floyd. It was first released in October 1970 and marks an interesting phase in the band's creative development.
The album is very different from Pink Floyd's previous works and contains an eclectic mix of musical styles, from progressive rock to orchestral elements.
The album's title track, "Atom Heart Mother", is a monumental piece that lasts approximately 23 minutes.
It was recorded in collaboration with the composer and arranger Ron Geesin and the EMI Brass and Percussion orchestra.
The piece is divided into six parts and combines rock music with orchestral arrangement, choral singing and sound effects. It is an experimental work that showcases Pink Floyd's innovative approach to musical structures and sounds.
"Atom Heart Mother" was commercially successful and reached high chart positions.
However, it received a mixed reception from some critics. Some appreciated the album's experimental nature and artistic ambition, while others found it disjointed. Nonetheless, the album is viewed by many fans and critics as an important milestone in Pink Floyd's development.
It's worth noting that "Atom Heart Mother" was the last Pink Floyd album where all band members functioned as equal songwriters and musicians before the creative dynamic within the group changed.
In the following years, Pink Floyd would continue to release innovative albums, including classics such as "The Dark Side of the Moon", "Wish You Were Here" and "The Wall".
★★★ Quadraphonic / 4 Channel RM Sound
Quadraphonic sound or 4-channel surround sound is a sound system that became popular in the 1970s. Unlike traditional stereo sound, which only uses two channels (left and right), Quadraphonic Sound uses four channels to create a spatial sound environment. The idea behind quadraphony was to give listeners a more intense and immersive sound experience.
There were various Quadraphonic sound formats, but one of the most famous was the RM (Regular Matrix) Quadraphonic system. This system was developed by CBS/Columbia and uses a matrix encoding technique to transmit the four channels in a conventional stereo signal. This meant that a Quadraphonic signal could be played back on a conventional stereo player, and when the signal was then decoded using a suitable Quadraphonic decoder, the listener could enjoy the full Quadraphonic sound experience.
Pink Floyd's album "Atom Heart Mother" was originally released in quadraphonic. The quadraphonic version of the album had the original stereo mix converted to a quadraphonic format. At the time, if listeners had a quadraphonic system, they could experience the music in a spatial environment where sound came from all four corners of the room.
Although Quadraphonic Sound had some followers, it was not able to establish itself permanently on the market. There were various reasons for this, including a lack of backward compatibility with traditional stereo systems, different Quadraphonic formats, and difficulty in playing correctly in different room environments. Ultimately, stereo systems became the standard and quadraphonic systems faded into the background.
