M.A. Murray / J.C. Ellis - A Street In Petra - 1940

A STREET IN PETRA Murray, M. A. and J. C. Ellis Published by British School of Archaeology in Egypt, London, 1940 Condition: Original quarter red cloth over printed paper covered boards with black lettering to spine and covers. Illustrated with 41 leaves of plates, this monograph narrates the authors' researches and excavations in Petra. Petra was the capital city of the Nabataeans, a nomadic Arab tribe with loosely bound trading territories from Arabia to Syria. They settled here by the sixth century B.C. and made Petra a major trading center that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome. Caravans mingled their beliefs as well as their goods here. Petra's walls show its religious evolution from idol worship through Byzantine Christianity to Islam. Petra remained independent until A.D. 106, when it was absorbed into the Roman Empire. Moderate age-toning along spine and edges of binding. Ex-library stamp to top and bottom edges, bookplate on inside of front cover, and library pocket on inside of back cover. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition. 38pp Text, 41 leaves plates. Dimension: 32.0 x 25.5 cm. Please view & usephotos for further condition detail. Ship tracked & insured.
