【Product details】
Step into the dramatic world of Japanese Noh theatre with this 20th Century Hannya mask, an exceptional piece hand-carved from hinoki wood. The mask's back features a smooth lacquer finish, while the front is skillfully painted with gofun, a traditional white pigment. The eyes are strikingly gilt, enhancing the mask's intense expression. Teeth and horns are embellished with golden mud (paint made from powdered gold leaf dissolved in glue water), adding to the mask's haunting allure.
The Hannya mask is an iconic representation of a vengeful spirit, consumed by jealousy and resentment. This artistic rendition features two horns on the forehead, painted with golden mud, symbolizing a woman's transformation into a demon. The mask's design strikingly contrasts sorrow in the upper half with the raging anger of the lower half, capturing the complex emotional state of the spirit.
Beyond its fearsome appearance, the Hannya mask poignantly reflects the conflicted nature of the demoness's heart. It embodies the regret and guilt associated with involuntary demonic transformation, juxtaposed with the tragic and intense emotions of a human overwhelmed by deep passion.
Despite its age, the mask is in good condition, with some wear and chipping of the gofun on the chin. Refer to the photographs to appreciate the mask’s current state. Accompanied by a cloth bag, it is an evocative collector's item, representing a poignant aspect of traditional Noh drama.
There is a slight surface crack visible near the edge of the right corner.
