博物馆 2.5 亿年鬣蜥与胃石 - 骨骼化石 - Barasaurus besairiei

This stunning complete fossil reptile skeleton is absolutely gorgeous and in the finest condition possible, with NO restoration From Madagascar and a prime example of the fascinating aquatic reptile and dinosaur ancestor, Barasaurus besairiei. It was found in a famous fossil formation, the Sankamena Valley, in the form of a concretion that was carefully split, partially revealing this unbelievable fossil. The skeleton show breathtakingly detailed preservation including skull, paddle with small toe bones, ribs and a stunning large tail. Notice the large number of stones found associated with the central portion of the trunk. At first glance, one might think these to be gastoliths, or stomach stones, found associated with sauropod dinosaurs. Gastroliths served the purpose of grinding the massive quantity of vegetation the dinosaurs would eat, much like the gizzard stones of fowl. In this case the parallel is more like the crocodylians which are known to swallow stones to serve as ballast, making it easier for the reptile to remain submerged. The large, paddle-like feet are certainly indicative of at least a semiaquatic lifestyle, and the swallowed stones would have made it easier for the animal to overcome its natural buoyancy. Barasaurus is presumed to have been partially aquatic, very similar to modern day marine iguanas. Location: Lower Sankamena Formation, Sankamena Valley, Madagascar. Age: Upper Permian - 250 million years old. Plate is 24 x 14 cm Rare of this quality
