Gyokuho Hasegawa (1822-1879) was born in Kyoto as the son of the painter Genmon Hasegawa, and studied under Keifumi Matsumura of the Shijo school. His teacher, Kagefumi, was the younger brother of Goshun Matsumura, the founder of the Shijo school, and Tamaki was Kagefumi's disciple in his later years. His classmates included Kiyoshi Yokoyama and Kiho Yagi, but his skill was said to be the best among Keibun's students.
