A finely modeled head of a Luohan / Arhat, probably Mahākāśyapa, the Xianglong Arhat 降龍羅漢 , mounted on a (later) hardwood stand for a height of 22.5cm and weight of 956g. Size of the head without the stand: cm. Solemn gaze with sunken cheeks, hollow eye sockets and lips pursed, with traces of polychromy.
Mahākāśyapa (Kāśyapa) was known for the sermon at Vulture Peak given by the Buddha at which occasion he said no words but only held up a flower. Kāśyapa is said to have been the only one among the crowd of disciples to have understood the message and he smiled. The Buddha recognized this and commended him for having reached the fourth level of Dhyana, a high level of virtue equal to his own.
Estimated age: Ming dynasty to early Qing.
