A Balinese polychromed tropical wooden so-called 'barong' mask, 1st half 20th century, ca 1925-1940, ca 14.5 cm. high, 21.5 cm. wide and 8.5 cm. deep.
The barong – a benign cross between a lion and a tiger – plays a leading role in the dance of the same name, with which evil spirits are expelled, depicted with fierce facial expression, bulging eyes, bushy eyebrows, roaring nose, gaping mouth with long fangs, wearing a stylized crown, with energy eruptions above and below the ears, minor wear.
