Beautiful and pittoresque set of scrolls depicting traditional spring and autumn activities within rice fields.
Kita Busei was a nanga-style painter, born in the 5th year of Anei, 1776. He studied with the leading figure in japanese art of that time, Tani Buncho (1763-1841), and accompanied his teacher on travels around western Japan to record the artworks held by temples and shrines. Busei also studied Kano-school and Rinpa techniques, and provided many illustrations for novels (unusually for an artist outside the ukiyo-e school).He excelled bird-and-flower and landscape paintings. Busei was good friend with Watanabe Kazan. He diad in 1857. when he was 81 year old.
His works could be found in the British museum, Metropoliten museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston among others as well.
