3256977. VICO MAGISTRETTI, TABLE LAMP, “Atollo”, black lacquered metal, Oluce Italy. Created in 1977, the Atollo table lamp illustrates the talent of the late Vico Magistretti (1920-2006). A champion of formal purity, Magistretti never ceased to invent absolute, enduring design. Atollo recounts the great Italian designer's attraction to strong, majestically balanced geometric volumes. The lampshade seems to float above the conical base. The primitive, proportional volumes are highlighted by the light, which creates a play of chiaroscuro. Atollo is characterised by a quest for simplicity: made entirely of varnished aluminium, it is devoid of any details or technical particularities: the quintessence of design according to Magistretti, for whom refinement is envisaged in the transparency of lines. The work thus becomes an essential element of purity, a model of permanent validity. While this object, which won the Compasso d'oro in 1979, is exhibited in the most prestigious museums (MoMA, etc.), it is also pursuing its destiny as a contemporary object for today's interiors.
