Through the act of "Bunshin" (i.e., "Irezumi"), two individuals, the "body" and the "spirit," will be made visible.
The project will recruit people via the Internet who will perform "ikezumi" on their bodies based on their "prayers, vows, and wishes," and will capture their bodies and the process of having their "words" engraved as a "single-character calligraphy" on their bodies. In the short stories of how and why each person came up with the character and his or her thoughts about the inscription, the trajectory of life, the absurdity of it, and the will to transcend it emerge.
The "calligraphy of a single character" connects the spirit and the body, and earnestly questions one's own existence.
Shinsuke Kiryu, a calligrapher and photographer, has created this work by examining the relationship between calligraphy and art, and transcending the boundaries between the two.
The word "Izezumi" has multiple meanings depending on religion and culture. In Japan, there existed a negative context as a form of punishment and a positive context in which it was performed as a form of wish or sanctification. A gap in consciousness and value between those who do the deed and those who see it. By dealing with the boundary between the two, this work also presents the nature of human perspectives and perceptions.
