Great wooden Matsumoto chôba’dansu 帳場箪笥 (merchant's document cabinet), in a single section, clad with hand-forged iron hardware. Fully restored, cleaned and waxed.
Made of indigenous hinoki (cypress) wood with a glossy Shunkei-style lacquer in a Bordeaux red hue. The drawer faces and door panels are made of precious Keyaki wood (Zelkova - "Japanese oak") in a warm brown hue but also with the darker finish still showing the lovely natural wood grain.
Designed with two pair of sliding doors and a removable panel, and six drawers of different sides. The panels all with a black lacquer border, and the knob of the removable panel shaped like a closed folding fan 扇子 (sensu).
The drawers equipped with large decorative iron lock plates shaped like auspicious well-filled money bags decorated with a dotted pattern. A feature added to cabinets distinctive to Matsumoto (Nagano prefecture). Set with a ‘mokkô’-shaped bail handle and with a raised knob on top shaped like chrysanthemum flowers 菊 (kiku). These smooth running drawers are very deep and have a lot of volume, for easy storage.
Period: Japan – Mid-19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period).
