Sturdy, heavy and deep wooden bô’dansu 棒箪笥 (cabinet of drawers with a locking bar) in one section, with a great aged patina. Fully restored, cleaned and waxed.
Constructed of precious hinoki cypress wood and indigenous sugi (cedar wood) finished with a Shunkei-style lacquered coating in a reddish brown hue still showing the lovely natural wood grain.
Designed with six drawers of different sizes and a hinged door. Three full-width drawers in the middle are protected by a vertical safety bar. The iron-clad hinged door opens to three more small drawers.
The hand-forged iron hardware of the bar adorned with a crest 紋 (mon) depicting a flower. The smooth-running drawers are equipped with elongated ‘warabite’-shaped bail handles set on a rectangular escutcheon, and paired with rectangular lock plates featuring a circular applique and a raised knob shaped like a chrysanthemum flower 菊 (kiku). They are very deep and have a lot of volume, for easy storage.
One of the small drawers with two illegible stamps probably describing its origin.
Period: Japan – Late Edo period (First half 19th century).
Dimensions:
Height 116.2 cm, Width 91.4 cm, Depth 53.5 cm.
The ishô dansu is in a very good restored condition with some minor traces of wear and a great aged patina. Three keys included, functioning in the old fashioned Japanese way, not very smooth. For a clear condition reference, please look at the photos.
