An astonishing, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a refined painting on shiny gold leaf featuring a lush flower garden in autumn housing some concealed creatures
Abounding with vivid and colourful flora, such as a soft pink hibiscus 芙蓉 (fuyô), red, blue and white ‘Morning Glories’ 朝顔 (asagao), a pomegranate tree 柘榴 (zakuro) with fruits so ripe they have burst open, tall pampas grasses 薄 (susuki), pink lespedeza 萩 (hagi), and bright red asters 野菊 (nogiku).
When looking closely, even a praying mantis 蟷螂 (kamakiri) and a cricket 虫 (mushi) are hidden between the greenery.
The artwork predominantly unfolds in the lower section of the folding screen, generating the illusion of an expansive, luminous sky, instilling a serene ambiance.
Surrounded by two brocade borders, a thin dark brown one and wide dark blue one. Protected by a black lacquer frame with decorative hardware.
Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (Second half 19th century).
