JALISCO POTTERY FEMALE FIGURE - 4TH CENTURY BCE TO 3RD CENTURY CE | BONHAM'S AUCTION
This intriguing Pre-Columbian Jalisco pottery figure represents a seated female form from West Mexico, crafted between 300 BCE and 300 CE. The hand-built figure measures 178mm in length, 127mm wide, and 89mm in depth, embodying the region's ancient sculptural traditions.
The figure's conical legs and outstretched arms complement her voluptuous form, a typical representation of femininity in Jalisco art. Her facial features are marked by puffy, circular eyes and a pronounced nose, a stylistic choice that captures the essence of the era's aesthetic preferences.
Despite repair to one leg, including resurfacing and overpainting along the break lines, the figure maintains its integrity. Minor abrasions and the softening of finer details have occurred, yet it retains a compelling presence with light earthen deposits enhancing its authentic patina.
Previously auctioned at Bomham'ss in San Francisco, California, in September 2007, this artifact's excellent form and condition make it a remarkable example of Jalisco artistry. It stands as a testament to the rich cultural narrative of West Mexico and is a valuable acquisition for enthusiasts of Mesoamerican history.
