DESCRIPTION:
Carved wood sculpture of Duamutef, one of the four sons of Horus. It presents a vertical record of hieroglyphic writing on the chest.
Text: “Offering made by the king to Osiris in Oun-an-fer, lord of the necropolis. “He gives food offerings to Noun...blessed past acquired from Osiris.”
He is represented with the head of a jackal, iconography that he acquired since the New Kingdom. However, he sometimes exchanged his appearance with that of Qebehsenuf, adopting the head of a falcon. He adopts a hieratic attitude, and on his embalmed body the legend of being an offering to Osiris is written in hieroglyphics. Along with his brothers Amset, Hapi and Qebehsenuf, Duamutef protected the mummified internal organs. Duamutef's duty was to protect the stomach. His protector was the goddess Neit. Duamutef was often depicted on sarcophagi and on the lids of canopic canopies. Many images of the Judgment of the Dead show him along with his brothers facing Osiris on a small lily.
