This African excellent carved statue is a representation of a pregnant woman embodying the matrilineal traditions of the Kulango honored in a cult of fertility. On the morphological level, the neck is stretched as is often the case in the Kulango figures, the body is quite narrow and slender. Maternity figures symbolize a central theme in African arts: that of fertility and filiation. Traditional Kulango statues are not common.
