Fuchi - 日本 - Edo Period (1600-1868)

DESCRIPTION Japanese Katana Sword Fitting called Fuchigashira. The metal fittings attached to the side where the guard (tsuba) meets are called "fuchigane," and the fittings attached to the opposite end of the tip are called "tsukagashira." These two are crucial parts as they come to the most prominent position when the sword is worn on the waist, indicating the dignity of the sword owner. Additionally, combining the fuchigane and tsukagashira is called "fuchigashira," and even today, they are popular among enthusiasts as a pair of artworks. "Fuchigane" (also simply referred to as "fuchi") is the metal fitting attached to the handle, particularly to the guard. While the tsukagashira is a fitting placed at the end of the handle wrap, the fuchigane is a fitting that covers the part where the handle wrap begins. Like the tsukagashira, there are both decorated and undecorated versions, and the wearer would choose according to their preference. The handle is the first part that the person facing the sword sees when it is worn on the waist. Therefore, samurai embellished each metal fitting to demonstrate their dignity. Initially, different decorations were applied to the tsukagashira and fuchigane, but gradually, the same pattern was applied, and they became known as a pair, called "fuchigashira." The decorations applied to the fuchigashira vary, including various plants and animals. Among plants, there are "millet" (awa), "chrysanthemum," and "arabesque." Among animals, besides singular depictions of "carp," "dragonfly" (victory insect), "lion," "crane," and "dragon," it is common for both plants and animals to be depicted simultaneously on one fuchigashira. Additionally, the family crest of the owning samurai may also be incorporated. Good condition, signs of wear from age, stains, rust and scratches; for condition, please, take a look at the pictures. SIZE: Fuchi : 3.8 x 2.2 x 1.3 cm Kashira : 3.3 x 2 x 0.9 cm NOITICE The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by Japan Post, DHL or FedEx depend on the situation. It takes about 3 weeks to receive normally. Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.
