Balkan (Greek) Gun Powder Flask
This antique gun powder flask likely dates back to the 19th/20th century and originates from the Balkans, possibly Greek in origin. Crafted from brass, it appears to have once been silver plated, though most of the plating has worn away over time. The spherical faces feature intricate raised relief metalwork designs on both the front and back.
The flask is adorned with chain suspension mounts in the form of cherub heads along the sides, while the bottom sides showcase double-headed crowned Greek Byzantine eagles. This symbol holds significant historical meaning, representing the unity between the Byzantine Orthodox Church and State, as well as the dual sovereignty of the Byzantine Emperor over Rome and Constantinople.
At the top, there's a cylindrical pouring spout, and its original stopper is secured to the flask with a chain. For valuation and further information about similar items, it's recommended to check online sources due to variations in rarity and value.
Despite most of the silver plating being worn away, the flask remains structurally sound, with the chain cap intact. This piece serves as a fine example of a classic Greek powder flask, often associated with the Greek War of Independence (1821-1832).
