This 21cm x 16cm presentation box contains one specimen of each
of the three class of achondritic meteorites coming from asteroid VESTA
(the biggest of the solar system close to be considered as a dwarf planet
like Pluto, Ceres, Sedna...)
One Eucrite, which is a basalic rock quickly cooled from a magma at the
surface of the asteroid.
One Diogenite, which is a magmatic rock slowly cooled on the deep
crust of the asteroid.
One Howardite, which is a regolithic breccia (like on the surface of the moon)
formed by crushed, mixed and partly melted fragments of the two previous
families during heavy bombardment of the asteroid during its early history
(mainly before 3.8 billion years ago)
Together they are called the HED meteorites, the VESTIAN SUITE.
Their origin have been definitely confirmed by the NASA spacecraft DAWN
in 2011, which has probed and mapped the mineralogical composition of
the asteroid during more than a year.
