The vermillion lacquered surface is elegantly adorned with detailed maki-e designs of chrysanthemums and bellflowers, set amidst geometric diamond patterns enhanced with gold leaf. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. The "Hidehira-nuri" technique specifically features decorations known as "Yusoku Hishimon," which include diamond and tanzaku (slender strips) shaped gold leaf arranged over Genji clouds, offering a richly symbolic and traditional motif in the Japanese aristocratic style. Chrysanthemums in Japanese culture symbolize longevity and rejuvenation, while bellflowers represent unchanging love, making this piece not only a visually stunning work but also rich in symbolism. Ichigo Iccho (1898-1991) was born in Ishikawa Prefecture and has been celebrated for his unique color sensibility, bold artistic decisions, and superior compositional skills, making him one of Japan’s highest-regarded maki-e artisans. His creations were selected several times for the prestigious Nitten exhibition and even garnered the patronage of the Crown Princess Michiko.
