Bowl decorated with fineline birds. Nayarit, Aztatlan, Western Mexico, 900 - 1200 AD Terracotta 17 cm L. PROVENANCE: Private collection, West Olive, United States of America. 1980 - 1970. CONDITION: Good condition. DESCRIPTION: The degree of advancement of the Aztatlán tradition is visible from the presence of ceremonial centres, laid out according to their astronomical observations. The temples were run by priests and there were important exchange networks, which implied intensive agricultural exploitation, systematic fishing activities, complemented by hunting and gathering, as well as the existence of industries with varying degrees of specialisation. The techniques for extracting prismatic blades from obsidian cores were also perfected; the introduction of metallurgy, which led to the production of artefacts made of copper and other alloys, such as fishhooks, axes, needles and bells; the manufacture and decoration of textiles; the production of Mazapa-style clay figurines and the design of seals with the distinctive features of the Aztatlán tradition.
