Place your bid today and bring the allure of the 1960s into your home! ***THE ARTIST*** HARTWIG HEYNE founded his pottery workshop in 1850 in the small village of Tschöpeln, about 10 km west of Gdańsk, then part of the German Empire, in what is now Poland. Due to large deposits of white and light gray clays in the area, the pottery trade was historically the main occupation in this town of about 330 inhabitants. Heyne's was one of nine potteries there; it employed at times as many as 50 people. In 1936, the town was renamed Töpferstedt, reflecting its primary industry. After WWII, the Heyne Family migrated from what was newly communist Polish territory (Töpferstedt was renamed Czaple) to Oer-Erkenschwick in the district of Recklinghausen in North Rhine-Westphalia, 75 km from the Dutch border. Daughter and master potter Christine Heyne founded a new, smaller business there with her aunt Meta at Esseler Str. 2: HARTWIG HEYNE GmbH. Her son Hans Bellers was the last master standing when the company closed in 2005. All production from the HARTWIG HEYNE workshop consisted of handmade, never moulded, studio items. They were fashioned rustically and so are generally heavier than moulded or otherwise more finely crafted studio ware. In addition to a pleasing heft, many pieces can be indentified by the studio's signature finish: a matt glaze in the bright rich color commonly known as Yves Klein blue (AKA International Klein Blue or IKB) after the deep ultramarine made famous in the work of that artist. Pieces, however, are also found with bright red, orange, and yellow glazes. A relatively prolific output, if not on the mass-production scale of the major West German pottery manufacturers, is evinced by the number of HARTWIG HEYNE vases that survive. For many years, the company was mistakenly known to collectors as Hoy Töpferei, probably due to a misreading of the incised mark "Hey" which appears on the base of some items. Other works were signed fully with "Heyne" and marked with individual letters and numbers denoting model. More recent examples sport a foil label reading "Hartwig Heyne pottery since 1850" with the form and size numbers inscribed by hand on the base.
