The wines of Château Pontet Canet, certified biodynamic since 2010, reveal the characteristics of great Pauillacs: concentration and complex aromas of cedar and black fruits. Over time, they have gained in freshness and balance, revealing additional notes of red fruits and morello cherry. The palate is sublime, with a unique elegance, featuring a silky expression almost reminiscent of Burgundy. The success of this wine is largely due to Alfred Tesseron, who manages the estate, assisted by Jean-Michel Comme until 2020 (succeeded by Mathieu Bessonnet). The estate’s philosophy treats the vineyard as a true garden to be nurtured with love, much like a child. This approach, coupled with the health considerations of the workers, is why the cultivation is certified biodynamic (a rare feat among the great classified growths of Bordeaux) and the natural rhythms of life are respected. In the cellar, the care continues with meticulous work. The blend consists of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and occasionally a small proportion (1%) of Petit Verdot in certain vintages to add complexity. Furthermore, the wine is aged in barrels, with the proportion of new wood not exceeding one third, for sixteen to twenty months. An innovative touch is that while two-thirds of the wine is aged in wood, the remaining third rests in amphorae.”
