-Marc Chagall (born Moishe Shagal on July 7, 1887 – died March 28, 1985) was a Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish origin. He was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries, and fine art prints.
Chagall’s early works, such as “I and the Village” (1911), were among the first expressions of psychic reality in modern art. His poetic, figurative style made him one of the most popular modern artists. While many of his peers pursued ambitious experiments that led often to abstraction, Chagall’s distinction lies in his steady faith in the power of figurative art.
Chagall’s Jewish identity was important to him throughout his life, and much of his work can be described as an attempt to reconcile old Jewish traditions with styles of modernist art. However, he also occasionally drew on Christian themes, which appealed to his taste for narrative and allegory.
As for the valuation of his works, Chagall’s paintings have fetched high prices at auctions. The price of a painting by Chagall ranges from 10,000 to 21,400,000€, a drawing ranges from 1,700 to 1,100,000€, a print from 110 to 50,000€, a ceramic from 150 to 195,000€, a piece of furniture from 9,600 to 80,000€, and a sculpture from 160 to 320,000€. His work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from 1 USD to 28,453,000 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork.
