This necklace is in great shape. It's made of special shell pieces called mother-of-pearl, which come from oyster shells. It's a traditional piece of jewelry from the Ifugao and Bontoc tribes in the Philippines. These tribes live in the central Cordillera region, where they built the famous stepped paddy fields in Banaue. Each mother-of-pearl piece is 7 cm long and has beautiful geometric designs engraved on it. They have two holes and are strung together with a cord made of plant fibers to wear around the neck.
Originally, this necklace, called Pangalapang, was meant for men, but old photos show that women wore them too. It was a symbol of social status, indicating that the owner could get materials from the coast. These necklaces were crafted in the east of Ifugao by the Mayaoyao people.
