【Product details】
This is a charming pair of Japanese kōgō (incense containers), each crafted with refined naturalism and seasonal elegance. Both pieces come with their original wooden boxes.
The first container takes the form of a fallen persimmon leaf, evocative of autumn’s richness. Its finely carved natural wood exterior has been finished in dry lacquer to resemble the warm hues and texture of a real leaf, while the interior is coated in glossy black lacquer. This piece is unsigned.
The second container is shaped as a cut bamboo segment, symbolising resilience and vitality. It is crafted by Yokoya Sousyu III (b. 1952), the third-generation master of the Yokoya woodcarving lineage. Comes with Singed Box.
The Yokoya tradition began with the first-generation master Yokoya Kōichi (b. 1888), who trained in Asakusa and in 1922 carved the Hōshi Shugyō-zu (Ascetic Practice of Buddhist Monks) for the Shibamata Taishakuten Temple, establishing the Sousyu school of Edo wood carving.
His son, Yokoya Yoshiichi, the second generation, carried on the tradition through the turbulent wartime and postwar years. He left behind notable works such as Gunsen Yūgi-zu (Playing Monkeys), and continued to produce temple carvings and Buddhist statues, preserving the family's technical excellence.
The third generation, Yokoya Mitsuaki, inherited the name in 1993 after ten years of rigorous training and has since expanded the Yokoya style into large-scale Buddhist sculptures and international exhibitions.
