An outstanding tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen), featuring a serene Kanô School-style painting rendered on radiant gold leaf, depicting an enchanting spring landscape.
The scene centres on a pair of ancient cherry trees sakura 桜 (cherry blossom), their branches bursting with delicate white blossoms. The surrounding landscape is teeming with birdlife—some perched in the trees, others scurrying along the mossy ground or refreshing themselves in the tranquil stream below. A rock formation protrudes from the stream, covered with moss and blooming with orange and white azaleas tsutsuji 躑躅 (azalea). The entire composition is gently enveloped by drifting gold leaf clouds.
Painted in colour and ink on a glimmering gold leaf background. The work is bordered by two silk brocade trims: a slender inner band in gold and a broader outer band in soft greyish green. Encased in a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with gilt metal hardware engraved with scrolling foliage motifs.
Period: Japan – around 1800 (Edo period).
Dimensions:
Total width: 376 cm (2 x 64 cm and 4 x 62 cm); Height: 169 cm.
Considering its age—approximately 200 years—the screen is in very good restored condition with expected signs of wear. Professionally restored larger areas are subtly visible in the gold, mainly near the hinges and edges. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
