Antoine Dubois for Mons Pottery Belgium / La Céramique Montoise - Art Deco vase with Cubist motifs
A very rare, very large vase by Antoine Dubois with the known tight Cubist motifs that he applied several times to similar, Cubist to almost Modernist vases from the early Art-Deco period.
The Vase is signed at the bottom with ‘370 MEX 83’, as well as the stamp ‘Made in Belgium’. Moreover at the top an extra label is preserved that also mentions ‘MEX MONS Belgium’. To finish it off, Antoine Dubois placed his own signature on the belly.
Presumably the vase was produced by the company that he founded himself in 1920, on his return to Bergen/Mons, named ‘Mons Pottery Belgium’. In 1925 the name changed to La Céramique Montoise. From then on, the vases mention ‘Bergen’ at the bottom, so with certainty this vase is produced before 1925, and after 1920. Before that Dubois was still active in Anderlecht, but this is contradicted by the label ‘Mons’ at the top. Possibly ‘MEX’ refers to the specific production of this type modernist vases, as it only found on vases with this motif. It is hard to tell if it directly refers to the motif, or to an subdivision within the company. In regard to the label at the top, the latter seems more likely.
Anyway quite a unique vase, very hard to find in this size. Furthermore it is in perfect condition, without any remark.
The height is around 35 cm (!), the diameter is 22 cm.
