Extraordinary Manila shawl, richly embroidered with different types of motifs made by hand on a background of ‘ala de mosca’ crepe. c. 1870
The incredible quality and variety of its embroidered motifs ( flowers, birds of paradise, peacocks, herons...) give this piece a unique and exceptional character. The execution of manual embroidery has been done with so much skill and thoroughness that a multitude of nuances and volumes can be distinguished on the birds, flowers, stems, tendrils, leaves... Each motifs has been reproduced on the reverse side, reaching the same perfection.
Woven in silk crepe on the traditional and prestigious brown colour called “ala de mosca” which is highlighted on the central cross.
This is a rare and exquisite work, enviable for an authentic collector or to sport in a relevant ceremony.
Due to the variety of colour shades and the delicacy of its execution, it can be framed in the second half of the 19th century, maybe between 1840 and 1870.
Dimensions: 165 x 160 cm the central canvas, plus 40 cm of fringe for the outline ( 10 cm of macrame hand-made latticework and 30 cm of straight fringe)
In good condition, although the fringe is detached at two small areas on the corners. Some minor perforation and an ancient restoration.
