EMW - 327-2 - 1955

EMW 327-2 Cabriolet (1955) HISTORY Before the Second World War, the BMW 328 had built a great reputation, but the absolute star of the 1930s collection was the designer of Peter Schimanowski's 327. EMW 327-2 is a legendary convertible. It is a direct follow-up to BMW's pre-war collection. EMW, or among us "Emma", has been a very short-lived car brand. It was only manufactured between 1945-1955. Our classic BMW / EMW 327-2 was in the manufacturing program from 1948 to 1955. The manufacture of BMW's rear-end cars ended in Eisenach in 1955. Stylish two-tone painting adds an impression. The 327 model - the Cabriolet or the Coupé - is still the most stylish of the ever-ending BMW brand, or should I say the EMW brand. PRODUCTION FIGURES BMW 321 (1945-1950): 8906 pieces BMW 326: 16 pieces BMW/EMW 327 (1948-1955): 505 pieces BMW/EMW 340 (1949-1955): 21249 pieces (Werner Oswald: Deutsche Autos seit 1945, Motor Buch Verlag) EXPORT East Germany sought to get foreign currency on the export market. The amount of production was really small. An added interest in the model is the fact that Finland has been the number one country in the world. The East German EMW and the same cars with a blue-white BMW logo exported 94 cars to Finland. Well, for a good reason, suppose that we have most of the preserved EMW 327 cars in the world. At least so far, because the interest and purchases of prosperous collectors are also known to us. Data on the total production of model 327 varies slightly depending on the sources. The safest number is the 505 cars mentioned by many sources, of which about 150 cars have been made of hard roof Coupé versions, 327-3. Out of that total, 94 cars imported to Finland are almost 19 percent of all production, quite remarkable amount. Over the years, they have been carefully traced and the so-called sure information is spoken of by a total of 64 individuals. Among them are restored, refurbished projects undergoing, awaiting revival and so-called spare-trucks. Scrapped or otherwise destroyed cars are also included in the list. This particular EMW 327-2 was first registered in Lahti (Finland) on October 30, 1956 with a registration number IH-666 (copy of original title available). We have a full owner´s history to present. The current owner of the car, is ranked ninth straight after her late husband, who had acquired the car in 1993. Preparations for the refurbishment work were started immediately in 1993. Thus, the project took a total of 11 years and the car was surveyed on June 3, 2004. FULL RESTORATION There have been quiet restoration periods as making of parts has required time. At the start of the project, it was imagined that the work of the lintel would be cleared by repairing small rusts. In practice, however, all had to be stripped to a "skeleton" stage and go through a full restoration. The EMW 327-2 was mainly known to been designed for export markets. Manufacturing was in many ways handcrafted. For example, the panels were done in series, but the finishing and the final installation were pure manual work. Conventions are therefore, almost without exception, car-specific. In all respects, refinement has been made to respect the original approach. Shortcuts enabled by current knowledge, materials and work methods have not been used, as is shown by the row of posts that attach the rear seat backrest upholstery. The goal has also been to build a car for driving. That is, the external plane has been set so that the car looks like it looks and the technical is so that it can be used. When looking for technical certainty, three spare parts had to be bought before the properly working rear axle drive was found. Of course, this acquisition has made it easier for the passenger car model 340 to have the same technology. Engine, gearbox and axle have all been stripped and rebuilt using new or reconditioned parts where possible. She drives just as good as she looks! The convertible canopy at EMW is a very exquisite construction, the structure is double layer and the middle gap is filled with seaweed insulation. The new one was built using the old remnants as a model. The original full-bodied fabric was found through the Mercedes-Benz brand for the new production of roofing materials in Germany. The colour is exactly the same as in the model obtained under the original canopy. At present, the canopy is both easy and quick to use, even if not operated at the touch of a button. The hardest job has been the wooden parts of the wooden frame mounted on the chassis, which were installed "in the wrong" way (without the actual chassis being unloaded). That way the seams and shapes were best preserved. Reinstalling the completely disassembled frame was laborious and very demanding even for a skilled craftsman. EMMA NOW The finishing result makes the glory of the original! The timeless beauty of EMW 327-2 convertible has been gained in the new blossom. The two-colour green painting is the original colour of the car, the green and pale-yellow leather upholstery as well. Chromates are fine, straight lines, bumper bumps and dust caps are Finnish production. Everything works and runs well! The long-running engine (66 mm x 96 mm) tends to be really comfortable even when the 11.2 kpm / 2500 / min (about 110 Nm) is not so great. However, the area of use is pleasantly low, so in a travel drive "the driver is relieved of switching" as the brochure occasionally indicates. The three largest four-speed gearboxes are synchronized. For the two largest gears, the driver can choose the freewheel function as desired. The gear lever is long, its movements are wide and the synchronization is a bit slow, so you can not talk about sporty gear selection. A little workout and initially a bit of concentration, so the job is done. Notwithstanding the sporty appearance, Emma has to hurry to keep up. It is suitable for a quiet trip. The top speed is promised 125 km / h - looks more promising - and 115 km / h is recommended for traveling speeds, which is a fairly straightforward ride for the convertible. For a 4.5-meter vehicle of EMW size, 1110 kg of self-weight can be kept small according to today's standard. Instead, the "financial framework" is somewhat questionable with an average consumption of 12 l / 100 km. The chassis greets you from the 1930s: In front, the transverse upper arms and the transverse leaf spring, the rigid shaft behind and the longitudinal leaf springs, and at the corner, so-called antifungals. The fuel tank draws 50 liters and is placed behind. The filling hole is located in the middle of the spare wheel under the lockable dust cap cover. The actual luggage space can only be accessed through the passenger compartment. EMW's finishing touches include lubricating central lubrication, but the heating device is not part of the car's equipment. AWARD WINNING The traditional fair of the Automobiili Historical Club of Finland has awarded EMW a qualification award for 1st class prize scoring 4.98 with the highest possible of 5.00. In Forssa (Finland), the jury of the traditional Picknick, held in the Pilvenmäki racetrack, estimated EMW's award for the 1950s. The two-liter straight-6 runs smoothly. Here are some more details: "The engine output is 57 hp and has the same design as the passenger car, 340-2 model, the oil cooler ensures high driving performance, which makes it possible for a powerful engine to be fully utilized in a complicated road. With a well-selected rear-wheel drive, the engine speed at high altitudes is also within the economic framework. " PLEASE NOTE: The vehicle can be viewed and inspected at any time and is to be done so prior to any arrangements of transport, this way you can be 100% sure that you will be happy with the purchase and both parties can insure a hassle-free and pleasant transaction. I have good contacts for shipping vehicles all over the world and can help out with this, if required after the vehicle has been inspected.
