Han Jelinger – nicknamed ‘the Cardinal’ was a Dutch artist. Han Jelinger received painting lessons from Guillaume Eberhard at an early age. In 1912, and in 1914 he received in Amsterdam his art diploma. From 1916 on, he studied at the national academy of fine arts. There, he received instruction from Antoon Derkinderen. Jelinger was nominated for the Prix de Rome in 1920. He deliberately chose to not compete for the award and instead went back to Maastricht. He mostly worked in Flemish cities. Han Jelinger was actually the one who, through his numerous paintings and etchings, would revealed the beauty of old Maastricht to his fellow citizens. Han Jelinger was a member of the gang of The Suisse.
