Set of three solemn altar cards in solid brass, handmade, embossed and gilt. Dating back to the early 20th century, with original cartouche and back cover in metal sheet. The Italian term “cartagloria” (altar card) is composed of “carta” and “gloria” because it initially contained only “Gloria in excelsis Deo”. Altar cards started to be commonly used in the period of the Catholic Reformation. This prayer was then accompanied by the Canon and the Offertory. There could also be: Credo, Munda cor, Supplices rogamus, Placeat tibi. The two side altar cards were regularly put in the 17th century.
In excellent condition.
Size of the large altar card: 29 x 23 cm.
Size of the two small altar cards: 21 x 15.5.
Original patina, never restored.
It comes from a private collection.
