A beautiful and rare bronze sculpture of a quadriga.
The Brandenburger Tor is Berlin’s only surviving city gate. The gate’s location was once the city boundary. Those wanting to pass through the gate were subject to paying a toll.
The gate is 26 metres in height, 65.5 metres wide and 11 metres in depth. The sculpture on top of the building is a quadriga (two-wheeled chariot with four horses) and was sculpted by Johan Gottfried Schadow. It was taken to Paris by Napoleon in 1806 as war booty. Eight years later is was returned to Germany by a German marshal and declared a symbol of victory. Since then the goddess carries a staff featuring a Prussian eagle and an iron cross with a laurel wreath.
