The so-called “Hirschfänger” (meaning deer catcher) is a long, narrow hunting knife with a double edged tip and a firm blade, which is used for killing wounded game.
Due to the length of the blade, larger or heavier hoofed game, especially red, fallow deer, but also wild boars can be caught with the hunting dagger. By stabbing the heart from the front, the hunter killed the animal, which was placed and/or wounded. Endangering the dog with another shot was thus avoided. The hunting dagger is carried on the left of the body in a baldric. There is a small hunting knife, marble, and “neck catcher” on the outside of the leather sheath. The hunting dagger is rarely used today, and hunters are not trained for using it.
