Moko drums (Moluccas) are actually not intended to make music. They are used as dowry, status symbol, money, medium of exchange with headhunters and as a method of payment for slaves. They are classified into 4 types. This is the type II, found on Flores and Alor. The motifs on these drums have their origin from the ancient temples on Java and show figurines as known from the Wajang , monster heads (kala), flowers and spirals. On the basis of these ornaments the drums are called "classic" or "Hindu".
The largest is equipped with the protective monster heads Kala. The height is 57, diameter 35 cm and weighs 8.6 kilograms, what is exceptional. The value in the Moluccas is partly determined by the weight
The smallest with raffia binding has wajang representations. 38 high and 24 cm in diameter
According to the old label on the inside it came to Europe in 1934.
