Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) a design genius, and generally regarded as a leading figure in the modern Finnish art industry. His favorite place was a place so remote located in the forests of northern Finland that helicopters delivered prototypes to his cabin because no car could reach him. It was in nature that he found his beloved loneliness and inspiration for forms that the industry could produce or artwork to create.
As Iittala's artistic leader, and with Wirkkala's unique artistic vision, he helped establish the company's global reputation. Throughout his legendary career, he created more than four hundred glass items for Iittala such as Ultima Thule, Arnica, Solaris and Tapio series.
