Mortar and Pestle, directly hollowed in a tree trunk by African craftsmen in the 1950s.
One of the most widespread illustrations of African daily life is the one of a woman crushing food in a wooden mortar. Heavy and voluminous mortars serve to reduce cereals and tubers in flour or paste. Furthermore, the latter are closely related to the cultivation of millet. Within rural areas, it was always used to separate the grains from the ears, in a traditional way.
The mortar measures 62 cm high, the diameter of the collar is 36 cm, it weighs 23 kilograms.
The pestle measures 72 cm long for a weight of 2 kilograms... that is a total weight of 25 kilograms for this exceptional object.
Whereas the figurine was carved in hardened tree bark. It represents a man’s face.
It measures 40 x 20 x 1.5 cm, and weighs 750 grams.
