雕刻 - 硬木 - Statue royale Kuba Ndop - 剛果民主共和國 DRC
The Kuba are famous for their remarkable Ndop sculptures representing their supreme leader also known as Nyim. These Bushoong kings have been ruling the historic Kuba kingdom since the 17th century. The first sculptures date at least back to the 18th century, perhaps even from 1650. The Ndop are idealized portraits of the king. The emblem at the front of the base allows to identify the latter. There are constant features on all these royal effigies:
- The king, bare-chested, sitting cross-legged on a platform (usually featuring some overweight), his face focused, his eyes closed;
- A headdress with a visor (shoody);
- Bracelets and a cross belt on the belly;
- A buttock cover on the back;
The statue is in good condition. There are some cracks in various places due to its age and a small piece of wood is missing on the left ear.
