Dodge - Dart Hemi L023 Super Stock - 1968

Dodge - Dart Hemi L023 Super Stock - 1968. The car comes from a private collection, which has been kept in a special climate-controlled warehouse for 50 years. The car only has 215 miles on the odometer and it is almost like the car just rolled out of the factory. The car is really very special because only 80 copies were built. It is a genuine dragster. And there are very few left that are completely original. There are also few or none of these types for sale, which makes the auction of this car very special. The car came with a coat of primer from the factory with a 426 HEMI block as an engine. It happened in February 1968, when many Dodge dealers in America were all getting promotional materials, Dodge's intention being to sell factory Dart Dragsters with the most powerful engine, the 426 HEMI. Nor was insurance included. These cars were not finished in the Dodge factory itself, but outsourced to Hurst Performance in Madison Heights, Michigan, where the cars received the final parts and were built. The HEMI 426 V8 that Chrysler had been using to terrorise the competition on the drag strip since 1964 had a 2 x 4 Holley carburettor, Cross-ram aluminium intake and a compression ratio of 10.25:1. The V8 was advertised with 425 hp and 664 Nm of torque, but it was claimed that the block had more like 500 hp. The Dodge is really built for the drag strip, as many pounds as possible have been shaved off. For example, the car does not have a back seat. In addition, this is a Dart and not a Charger or Coronet, which were a lot heavier. The standard steel bonnet / engine bonnet and fenders have also been replaced with fibreglass ones. Like most factory dragsters, the LO23 HEMI option disappeared as quickly as it came into being, because by 1969 the option was gone. So it was a 1-year option that could be purchased. That is why this Dart has remained so rare. The engine is original, transmission has been replaced in the past. The original VIN is on the engine and the boot lid has a matching sequence number. The car is in a very neat condition and is free of rust. The engine and compartment are in good technical condition, the car has been serviced, and everything on the car is working, the car drives and brakes well. A truly unique car that rarely if ever comes on the market. The last example sold was a similar HEMI Dart L023, with low mileage and sold in January 2022 at an auction for $302,500.
