Artist description:
Kano Tan'yu (狩野 探幽, January 14, Keicho 7 (1602) - October 7, Enpo 2 (1674)) was a prominent painter of the early Edo period and a member of the Kano school. He was the son of Kano Tan'yu. He was also known by the art name Tan'yusai and his given name was Morinobu(守信).
Tan'yu is often regarded as a prodigious and talented painter. While inheriting the style of the Momoyama period, he deeply studied the works of Song and Yuan Dynasty painters, as well as Sesshu Toyo. He skillfully utilized varying brushstrokes, ink density, and the use of empty space on the canvas, creating an elegant and refined painting style. His contributions helped establish the foundation of Edo period painting.
